The oldest music video festival in the world plunges into a Hot Mess!
Urban Dictionary defines the term Hot Mess as follows: When one’s thoughts or appearance are in a state of disarray but they maintain an undeniable attractiveness or beauty. The artistic director of the 26th Oulu Music Video Festival Anna-Mari Nousiainen goes on to ellaborate that this year’s programme dives in and explores chaos, representation and digitality – You will see not only music videos but video art, movies and VJ-performances.
International guests, discussions and pushing the limits of format
Estonian director Anna-Lisa Himma, known for her unique music videos with Tommy Cash will present her work and work process in master class-screening as well as participate as a member of the jury of the national competition series. Parisian post-production guru Clément Chasseray will hold a workshop and open up his work process for the audience. Chasseray has worked on videos for popular French rappers which have gathered tens of millions of views.
This year there will be discussion on ethnicity and the marginalization of bodies. The audience will be led into the subject by Caroline Suinner and Meriam Trabelsi of the Ruskeat Tytöt and Pehmee collectives
Artistic director Anna Mari Nousiainen will also curate and exhibition that continues the Hot Mess theme. The exhibition focueses on media art and sculptures that use new technology. The themes of the artists range from social media to the edges of the digital world as well as body image and pop culture. Artists Emma Ainala, Hemuloordi and Munalissu are just a few of the many fresh artists exhibiting their art.
Insane journeys and meditations on humanity
Two movies seen at this year’s festival are Beats and French Kiss Goes to Oulu. Brian Welsh of Black Mirror fame and producer Steven Soderberg bring you Beats, a movie about friendship and the liberating force of dance music packed with a powerful soundtrack. French Kiss Goes to Oulu is a documentary on the crazy journey of air guitarist French Kiss travelling from France to Oulu for the Air Guitar Worldchampionship.
Domestic flavor at the festival is represented by short movies curated by Otto Suuronen and VJ Indigo’s experimental Avaruusromua 28 vuotta: Betonisen aikakauden muistomerkit. VJ Indigo will also perform at the after parties with the likes of Serot and Draama-Helmi.
The corner stone of the festival is of course the national competition series backed by the Carte Blanche screenings and retrospectives from industry professionals.
The full programme will be released in the end of July with more screenings, movies and artists!
